Dear Subscriber First Name, Art holds what words alone cannot. Sound reveals what the eye might miss. This month, we're sharing two gifts that help us see—and hear—the Nooksack watershed in new ways. Just over a year ago, after we presented the early seeds of this idea at a Paper Whale gathering in Bellingham, painter Christopher Remmers approached me with an idea. He wanted to create portraits of the people choosing to work together for this river—to hold their courage, their complexity, and their willingness in paint. I knew it was big. What I couldn't yet see was how powerful it would be to have these moments forever held in art. Not as tidy narratives or polished outcomes, but as living witnesses to the brave, messy work of building trust across difference. The other gift comes from the next generation. Four environmental studies students at Western Washington University—Haley Radde, Jacob Crain, Samantha Boulware, and Tessa Beecher—created an interactive sound map of the Nooksack River, inspired by our October gathering and guided by professor Connor Harron. Their Storymap layers the voices of the watershed: the rush of glacial meltwater, the stories of farmers and fishers, the quiet persistence of salmon navigating home. Two expressions. One river. Both reminding us that this work belongs to all of us—and to those who will come after.
