The Watershed Dinner: Breaking Bread, Building Trust

In March 2025, a small group of tribal members, farmers, and community members gathered in a Bellingham home to share stories and help guide the course of this project. The event featured shared meals, storytelling, and facilitated dialogue focused on building trust and cooperation around water stewardship in the Nooksack River watershed. Tribal fishermen contributed fresh-caught salmon while farmers provided potatoes, cheese, and berries from their land. Symbolic moments, such as dairy farmer Rich Appel inviting young Lummi leader Free Borsey to fish on his land, underscored the project's commitment to bridging divides. Former Lummi Chairman Jay Julius shared stories connecting his lineage to the signers of the 1855 Point Elliott Treaty, creating breakthrough moments of understanding among all present.
