Free Borsey
Free Borsey (Tsx'vilum) is a young Indigenous leader from the Lummi Nation whose traditional name connects him to his people's creation story as survivors of the Great Flood. Raised on the Lummi reservation after early challenges, Free has become a powerful voice for environmental stewardship and cultural preservation in the Pacific Northwest.
As co-recipient of the 2024 Bullitt Prize and Environmental Stewardship Specialist at the Setting Sun Institute, Free combines traditional ecological knowledge with contemporary environmental science. His deep spiritual connection to the Nooksack River embodies the Indigenous understanding that "water is life" – guiding his work in salmon protection and watershed collaboration.
Through reviving the Lummi Youth Canoe Family and his role as a traditional Salish artist, Free bridges ancestral wisdom with modern environmental challenges. His vision emphasizes that true protection of sacred waters requires all communities to work together, ensuring healthy ecosystems and cultural traditions endure for future generations.
